Burn victim Michael Brewer tells of attack
By RAFAEL A. OLMEDA AND JUAN ORTEGA
There were things Michael Brewer remembered vividly about the day he was set on fire.

The Deerfield Beach teenager remembered the cool feeling of rubbing alcohol splashing onto him. He remembered the burning sensation, the impulse to run and jump into the swimming pool. He remembered wanting to stay in the water, and seeing the first results of the horrific attack he had just endured.

Detectives recorded their Nov. 23 interview with Brewer, 15, who survived burns over two-thirds of his body. Prosecutors on Monday released the recording, along with dozens of other documents related to the case.

Police apprehend Paul Merhige -- Thanksgiving Day murder suspect -- in Keys
By CAMMY CLARK AND SERGIO BUSTOS crline cclark@MiamiHerald.com

Paul Michael Merhige, accused of killing four relatives on Thanksgiving Day in Palm Beach County, was tapping the keyboard of a computer in a Keys motel room late Saturday when police officers burst through the door and took him into custody, authorities said.

On Sunday morning, he was denied bond and sent to the Palm Beach County Jail to await his next court appearance. He faces four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

His arrest late Saturday night marked the end of an intense 38-day manhunt by Palm Beach County and federal authorities who got a tip from a Keys motel owner who had been watching a preview of an upcoming story about the murders on the television show America's Most Wanted.

Out of prison, man still awaits freedom
By PAULA MCMAHON

It has been 107 days since Anthony Caravella was released from prison, but he says he's still not free.

It will take more time, he thinks, to catch up on what he missed during the 9,389 days he spent behind bars for a Miramar rape and murder that recent DNA testing suggests he did not commit.

Caravella was 15 when charged with the brutal 1983 slaying. He served about 26 years of a life sentence before Broward prosecutors took the extraordinary measure of seeking his temporary release Sept. 10 while they check the accuracy of the results and test other evidence.

Dade horse killings bring more attention to illegal slaughterhouses
By CURTIS MORGAN AND JUAN CARLOS CHAVEZ

For 20 years, Tony Maqueira has routinely trucked pigs down from upstate to sell in rural Northwest Miami-Dade. With demand for a Nochebuena roast pig at its peak last week, he simply parked his squealing load along West Okeechobee Road and waited for customers from nearby small farms to come to him.

Asked if buyers are licensed to kill and sell pigs, Maqueira, an impeccably polite man wearing the straw hat and rubber boots of a working rancher, appeared momentarily puzzled. Then he shrugged and explained there were worse things to worry about in these unpaved, impoverished outskirts: cockfights, dogfights, guns, drugs.

``This is food,'' he said. ``This is good for the people.''
